Scab is a short animation premiering at the Siggraph 2009 Computer Animation Festival and conference in New Orleans, August 1-6th. The piece explores the emotional experience of repetitive trauma, injury and the healing process through the use of 3d animation, motion captured dance, special effects, dissonant music, and direct audio triggering of visual elements. Set to an experimental musical score and loosely referencing figures from video games, science fiction/fantasy films and comic books, the animation uses the visual style of abstract painting with movement derived from contemporary dance. Conceived as an animated painting set to music, Scab employs the aesthetics of abstraction and dissonance.

Motion Capture of the improvised dance sequence was generously furnished courtesy of Long Island University’s ADAM’s Center Motion Capture studios at the Brooklyn campus. Ms. Moghaddam modeled a series of characters in Newtek Lightwave 3D made up of parts that were directly modulated by the music and choreographed by the motion capture data. For the background she used painted elements that were then further audio modulated by particle systems also in Lightwave. Using a dynamic Cinema Verite camera style and other cinematic influences, Ms. Moghaddam then staged the entire animation for the screen.

The groundbreaking short animation is part of the new Visual Music category of the prestigious Siggraph Computer Animation Festival, the world’s premiere showcase for the best in computer animation from feature films, TV, video games, commercials, music videos to independent shorts. Scab was additionally selected for the Siggraph Review DVD available for sale at the conference. For more information, a full press kit, and press review copies contact Marjan Moghaddam.
